A New Mayor For Allentown

One week from today Allentown elects a new mayor, hopefully.   I believe next Tuesday will be a long night for the top three contenders.  On Facebook this morning I saw a Hispanic congregation rooting and praying for Ed Pawlowski.  He spoke there on Sunday,  and apparently they believe in him more than the FBI, which has 54 counts of pay to play against him.

It still appears to me that The Morning Call is doing all they can for Ray O'Connell. They position his ad at the top of their webpage, and feature one letter of praise after another for him.  I remember in 05  when they buried my ad on the inside bottom of a middle page.

Nat Hyman has been endorsed by Charlie Dent.  Dent is popular across party lines, and hopefully his endorsement will be sufficiently conveyed to the voters.

While a Pawlowski win might still give O'Connell a delayed victory in 2018,  after Pawlowski is found guilty, the city would remain in paralysis for another 6 months.  It would be much better for  Allentown to awaken from its coma next week, and elect Nat Hyman.

  2. I hope the less than honorable Mayor Ed Pawlwoski said a few confessions during that Latino church ceremony. But once again, he is delusional!

MM, you are once again spot on in your analysis. I cannot believe that the Hispanic community is that stupid or ill-informed about his dishonor and they totally disregard the Justice Department's 54 indictments, including six [6] lies made to FBI investigators. Conversely, the Syrian community, who are intelligent and political adept, seem the same. This illustrates the moralistic weakness in our political system! However, morals are not a prerequisite to vote.

Even more distressing is the O'Connell/Hendricks democratic solution to fill the void once Boss Hogg goes to jail. Nobody said politics wasn't dirty, but this just shows what politics in Allentown has dipped to.

Positioning at the top of the web page is obtained by paying for it. You've no evidence that O'Connell hasn't paid for the ad, so the idea that the Morning Call is "doing all they can" for O'Connell isn't supported by his ad appearing at the top of their web page.

It sounds like your print ad appeared on an inside page because you didn't pay for premium placement on the front page, and you believe this was part of a larger conspiracy against your campaign.

  4. bob@12:03, back in 05 the Call was still endorsing candidates, and they endorsed Pawlowski. my campaign was in fact was marginalized, however that was twelve years ago, and water over the dam. we're now in 2017, although the Morning Call no longer prints editorials (for the most part), their personnel still has preferences, which are expressed in subtle ways. for instance, look at how they justified continued reporting on O'Connell with that 15% threshold they then ignored. one common denominator between their editorials of the past and now is bill white. he is now a "senior" statesman there, and I believe behind much of the policy.

  5. Mike,

If I'm not mistaken, their coverage policy doesn't specify what to do when a write-in candidate polls significantly one way but not another. This needs to be updated for the future. In the present, conflicting polls and the lack of clarity of their rules necessitated an executive decision, which whatever the decision was going to be criticized as unfair by one or more parties. I read the publisher's explanation of why O'Connell continues to be reported on and I found it reasonable.

In my experience, speculating about agendas can be endlessly entertaining but it often winds up being an exercise in fencing with ghosts.

    Happy Halloween!

  6. Marion Barry to get his own statue in Washington, DC

Having cast the clay model and shipped it off to the foundry for a casting mold, the Washington, D.C. city council is set to approve a new statue honoring...Marion Barry.

    According to WMAL:

Vince Gray, the councilmember for Ward 7 and former Mayor of DC, said he expects the council vote to be unanimous in favor of installing the statue. "It's the right thing to do," Gray said.

  7. Perhaps The Morning Call should spend more time in their own archives.

To quote O'Connell, himself, as reported by TMC's Emily Opilo in July of 2015, "There have been no charges filed against Ed Pawlowski. There has been no indictment. At this point, let the process play out, and I'm sure in the end Pawlowski will be vindicated in this situation."

I find it astonishing that no one in the professional media wants to question O'Connell with respect to these statements made to the press a little more than two short years ago. Either O'Connell was complicit and lied through his teeth or my former principal at Trexler was simply clueless. Assuming the guy is not a liar, logical minds must then ask what ELSE is O'Connell clueless about? THIS is the "most qualified person" whom I'm supposed to "write-in" for Mayor?

Anytime Bill White wants to write one of those "Explain It To Me" articles, I am ready to read the Spin Doctor with the impeccable credentials.

  8. Sitting this one out, as the best choice seems to be "none of the above".

  9. MM,
Blight and degradation to the hole of Allentown pa is there design. This is not a conspiracy its a fact.

Just take for instance knowingly filling the pool acting with malice and for thought as a whole to the tune of 3mill+. Any and all warranties are nul and void as well as the insurable peril cause clause billable like the fifth floor flooding of lower floor?
